About Me
Hi, and welcome to my site! I'm Karen Kann, designer of Uniquely Yours Handcrafted Jewelry & Accessories. I am a wife, daughter, sister, auntie, loyal friend, music therapist, and a lover of all things soft. My first big creative outlet was in songwriting, and I received a degree in music composition prior to my degree in music therapy. Though I'm not songwriting these days, the creativity still has to go somewhere! So, here's my story.
In April of 2010, I started making earrings as a distraction from the stress of everyday life. My intention was to make earrings just for myself, but I found the process so peaceful that I kept it up. To me, they are pieces of art, and one of a kind. Each one is different in its own way. Some are elegant and classy, while others are fun and spunky. Every time I finish a pair, I feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment because I know a lot of time, thought, creativity, effort, and compassion went into making each one.
In September of 2010 I branched out and started making necklaces. I found it just as peaceful and rewarding as earrings, but almost even more-so because they take longer in planning, designing and creating. Because I have opportunities to use more beads, I'm able to create some really nice and more diverse designs.
Never one to make things easy with my creativity, I decided to make my own pendants using resin. This has had a large learning curve but it's been so much fun! Many items can be embedded into resin, and I've really enjoyed experimenting with colored dyes, pigments, stickers, images printed from my computer, flowers, and other small items.
And in the later part of 2011, for some reason, I decided I didn't have enough stuff to experiment with so I learned how to work with and manipulate polymer clay! This is an extremely creative medium, almost to the point that it makes me unable to decide which techniques to learn first. It's been challenging, fun, and another medium in to which I can lose myself.
When you purchase my jewelry, you are purchasing a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork. You are the only one who will own a piece exactly like that, and I take much pride in this. No two designs are ever the same.
